A luxury desert camp keeps everything that makes a night in the Sahara special — the dunes, the silence, the stars — and adds a proper bed, a private space and a much higher level of comfort.
The word is used loosely in Merzouga, so it is worth being precise. In practice, a luxury desert camp is defined by four things: a spacious private tent, a private bathroom, real hotel-style bedding, and a more personal level of service at dinner and throughout the stay. If one of these is missing, you are probably looking at a comfort camp with a luxury label.
On this page we describe what a luxury stay typically involves. On each camp page, we list only the facilities that the camp has confirmed, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
Luxury tents are closer to a room than a tent: high ceilings, carpets or rugs on the floor, furniture, electric lighting and sockets. In the camp shown in our photos, the tent rooms have woven headboards, wall lamps, a small seating area and glass doors or windows that look out over the camp and the dunes.
Layouts usually include double rooms for couples, twin rooms, and family rooms with extra single beds. Tell us who is travelling and we will check which layout is available on your date.
A private bathroom is the main reason people upgrade to luxury. Typically this means a toilet, washbasin and shower inside or directly attached to your tent, so you don’t walk across the sand at night. Hot water in the desert depends on the camp’s setup (often solar or gas heating), so if a hot shower matters to you, we confirm it for your specific camp before you book.
Expect proper mattresses, clean linen, pillows and warm blankets — nights in the desert are cold for a large part of the year. Towels are usually provided in luxury tents. If you need an extra bed for a child, mention it in your request.
Dinner is served at the camp in the evening, typically a Moroccan menu of soup, salads, a main dish such as tagine, and dessert or fruit with mint tea. Luxury camps generally put more care into presentation — set tables, candles and lanterns — and some can arrange private tables. Breakfast is served after sunrise. Dietary requirements can usually be accommodated if you tell us in advance.
Many guests reach a luxury camp by camel, riding into the dunes of Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon and stopping on a dune for sunset. If you would rather not ride a camel, or you are travelling with heavy luggage, many luxury camps can be reached by 4x4. Whether a 4x4 transfer is included or an extra depends on the camp — it is listed on each camp page when confirmed.
At the camp in our photos, evenings are spent around the fire pit with traditional drumming and music. After that, the best entertainment is the sky: with very little artificial light around Erg Chebbi, the stars are remarkable on a clear night, especially around a new moon.

It depends on what you want from the night. If you are travelling as a couple, celebrating something, or simply want to sleep well and have a hot shower before a long drive the next day, a luxury camp makes the whole experience more relaxed.
